Humans the dumbest species on the planet?

Dear Reader,

Are humans the dumbest species on this planet?

Are we doomed to extinction?

Sometimes I think so.

(But not you Reader - you have a survival advantage because you're subscribed to my newsletters 👍)

Take the area of light and Human Health.

It's one of the great ironies of our age that we go to great lengths to understand how light (intensity, spectral properties, timing) impacts:

And yet we ignore it in terms of human health.

Try it yourselves: Get on Google and type "light spectra” + [field of interest] e.g. fish health in aquaria or poultry farming or dairy cows or horticulture.

Or whatever you want.

You'll get reams of info.

Here's something I found in about 10 seconds about aquariums:

"Proper aquarium lighting is more than just a visual enhancement. It influences the behavior, growth, and overall health of the aquarium's inhabitants. Hence, understanding and implementing the right lighting conditions are paramount for every aquarium owner."

Which is why I keep banging on about light and the role it has to play in any health-related goal we undertake, from weight loss to avoiding chronic disease to longevity.

Ignore the role of light in human physiology and you're undermining EVERYTHING else you're doing. No diet, exercise regimen nor supplement stack will ultimately succeed until you fix your light diet. I'm looking at you Bryan Johnson.

So it's handy that I'm recording a special deep dive on the Light Diet in the next couple of weeks with Ricky Du Plessis.

Ricky is a "brother from a different mother" with a story similar to mine. He's a project manager in TelCo who struggled with his own health until he dived down his own rabbit hole of research.

Subsequently he's fixed his health, written a book called Conquering King Stomach: A Guide to Species Appropriate Nutritional Lifestyle Change (get the paperback on Amazon here) and is developing his podcast under the brand Animal-Based Dad.

I recommend you get his book and like, follow and subscribe to his Facebook, Instagram, Linkedin, Substack, podcast (in your preferred podcast app, here's Spotify) and Youtube Channel.

At the time of writing he's already recorded a profile interview with me (and a whole series of others with fascinating stories of people who understand metabolic health) and he's started a series of deep dives dedicated to individual topics.

I'm recording 5 different topics with him, to be released weekly:

  • Inflammation (Embedded Spotify link below, click here for YouTube),
  • Circadian Rhythms,
  • The Light Diet,
  • Accelerated Aging,
  • The CICO myth

This is free, detailed information folks so go and subscribe and have a listen/watch.

Each episode will also be packed with loads of actionable tips.

Here's the episode on Inflammation:

Sandy Abram is an Australian sister-in-arms, cut from the same cloth as me (read her story here). She's prepared a fantastic resource called the Solar Callus Blueprint.

Ostensibly it's a guide to building your Solar Callus - your natural protection against sun burn - but it's about much more. She's prepared a special price of £9.90 for the first 20 of you who purchase this valuable resource.

You can purchase it by clicking here or clicking on the picture below. It's fully referenced with hyperlinks to relevant studies.

It's great timing for us humans at the 50º North (London, Paris, Berlin, Prague, etc) and above, as UVb has returned to our lives. Follow the easy instructions and you won't have to worry about sun screen or the sun all summer! (and you'll harness all the sun's nutrition).

Another useful resource is SOLshine Photo Nutrition. You can download for free this simple PDF highlighting the importance of light. MMH10.bioEnlightenment™ SOL.pdf

Or you can download the book Health And Light by Dr. John Ott here. (Wait for the pop-up)

You've probably unknowingly seen Dr. Ott's work in Disney animations from your childhood as he was the studio's pioneer of time-lapse photography.

He made some pretty incredible observations about how different light spectra impact the ability of plants to grow, reproduce and thrive (those horticulturists again!). Here's a free documentary on the subject from 1974 on YouTube called Exploring the Spectrum.

(NB. The 1st 5 minutes of the film randomly starts with a jazz band sequence before the actual film starts 🤷‍♂️, you can skip through that)

If you're a parent, you'll be fascinated by this 160 second video: how a hyperactive kid with a learning disability learned to read in 90 days after they changed the classroom light source. These days, children spend most of their time indoors under artificial Mal-illumination. No wonder then that we're seeing an increase in ADHD!

You'll also learn how full spectrum light doubled hens' lifespan and increased egg yield and how lab mice lived only half as long under limited spectrum lights compared to full spectrum or natural sunlight.

Are we all shortening our lifespan by living under narrow spectrum LEDs?

Dr. Ott's work gave birth to a whole industry of specialised light fittings, for both horticulture (the paradox again!) and office and home use, culminating in these amazing lights: the SOLshine BioBulb and the Photovites panel.

I've highlighted several great light therapy (aka photo biomodulation) products in past newsletters, but these 2 products provide the most faithful representation of natural sunlight available as of today.

A great aid if you struggle to spend time outdoors and perfect for the winter!

Why are they so good?
Because they represent almost the entire visible and non-visible spectrum of sunlight, from trace UVa through the balanced visible range all the way to 1000nm of near-infrared. In fact, all they are missing is UVb and the wider wavelengths of infra-red that we get from the sun.

Compare the spectral composition of the Photovites panel...

...with the spectrum of the sun:

Not much difference, eh?

You can download the full Photovites spectral analysis document here: sphere 2.pdf

1 The Photovites Panel combines 2 light therapy modulations in 1 product.

-> A SAD light with over 13.000 Lux for switching on your metabolism and brain function in the morning, which includes the red and near infrared of sunrise,

-> A red and near-infrared only light mode mode for targeted therapy. I use my red/NIR panel regularly for pain-relief, accelerated wound healing, reducing bruises and swelling post football injury, and eliminating knee pain (red/NIR restores collagen in joints).

2 The BioBulb has an identical full spectrum and sufficient power to light up a desk or reading spot with almost 11.000 Lux, and is intended for longer-term day-time use at a work station or school desk. You could call it a "nutritional light shower".

Because this product is so unique and effective I've teamed up with SOLshine so you can get a 10% discount on their products: use the discount code MMH10 at check-out. There's also free global shipping and a 60-day money back guarantee.

You save the most money when you buy the bundle of panel and bulb with handy telescopic floor lamp stand. Take a look at the bundle here.

The NHS does have some advice on SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) and light therapy, but typically it comes after drugs and counselling and contains the normal crap about UV light. You can view their inadequate recommendations here.

TL;DR:

  • We know lots about the effects of light on health, but don't apply that knowledge to ourselves,
  • You can learn more about it via free materials and podcasts (links above),
  • You can move to action by purchasing the inexpensive comprehensive guide by Sandy Abram (links above),
  • You can get ahead of your peers by getting outside more or filling your home/office with sun-replicating light from a SOLlight bulb or panel (10% discount above).

You definitely know someone who doesn't know what you now know - forward this email to them and they can read it and subscribe for more by clicking here.

P.S. This email was about external light - you wait until you hear about your own internal light (aka biophotons)! That will blow your mind. But you'll have to get my free BioHack Pack for that. Just click here to start getting it.

P.P.S. Clients of my Midlife Look Sharp Formula 1:1 fat loss and health coaching programme learn all this and more. That's why I can guarantee they'll lose at least 9cm from their waist in 3 months. Just sayin'. Want to do the same? Book a free discovery call.

Sending you full-spectrum rays of Spring,

Roderick

Sunset at the Forest Circadian Retreat

Dear Reader, Nia Day, Founder of the Halestra Wellness platform, interviewed me about my 2026 Fasting Challenge (5 days fasted in a forest wilderness) and wrote a beautiful, contemplative text. I loved this framing so much I feel obliged to share it with you. Thus I am reproducing it below (with her blessing). "I've been thinking a lot this week about discomfort. The things we instinctively avoid because they're inconvenient, unsettling or simply a little harder than the easier option. In...

Morning mist in the forest

Dear Reader, 5 days without food, living wild in the forests. This is what happened: 108 hrs fasted 82,000 steps 50 km hiked 1600 vertical metres 11500 calories burnt 0 ingested 4kg lighter 4 tics (discovered so far) Short version: I'm still alive! What went right: Didn't swallow a calorie from start to finish (piece of cake when you're fat adapted and have built up the "fasting muscle"), Got my re-feed just right (no over-eating or gastric problems), Lots of forest bathing (see list of...
