The dangers of Vitamin D

Dear Reader,

Today I'm bringing you some critical information about Vitamin D.

You see, we think Vitamin D is universally good for us. We get our levels tested, or we'll happily munch it as a supplement or even get prescribed mega-doses at the Doctor's. It's even added to all sort of other products, from supplements to food products.

But this Vitamin D abuse could be causing more harm than good.

I've always promoted the idea that "if you can make it, don't take it", referring to Vitamin D and various other popular supplements. And thanks to having dived into the resources in this specialist Facebook group, I've learned that Vitamin D supplementation is a risky business.

The group was started by a layman, Jim Stephenson Jr., who took it upon himself to dig deep into the scientific research on Vitamin D. And wanted to share what he had found.

Typically, his conclusions go directly against the standard mainstream narrative! (just like other myths: from fibre, through cholesterol to salt)

However, just last week this lady member posted a fascinating series of Artificial intelligence Q&As about Vitamin D and a lot of pieces fell into place for me.

You see, it's not only a matter of the source of your Vitamin D (exogenously consumed vs synthesised naturally in your skin), but the timing makes a huge difference too!

The document answers these questions:

  • Can you just supplement Vitamin D? And why that can cause more harm than good,
  • Do we need Vitamin D supplements in Winter? How winter affects our Vitamin D utilisation,
  • How there’s a careful dance between melatonin and Vitamin D,
  • Why you should approach supplemental melatonin with caution,
  • Why electrolytes (magnesium, potassium and sodium) are critical for proper Vitamin D utilisation?
  • Why your lab Vitamin D levels are misleading you,
  • And how you can get it right either naturally or using gadgets,
  • And specific questions on morning sunlight & Vitamin D as related to things like cholesterol, metabolism and weight gain, Alzheimer's and other mental health issues, Anaemia, Allergies and several other topics.

So brew up your favourite coffee (or even better, tank up on Unimate Yerba Mate tea), go sit out in the sun and get stuck in. I think you'll find it fascinating!

And it will definitely change the way you approach Vitamin D supplementation!

To make it a bit easier for you, I've recorded an 18-minute video guide to the document, pulling out some main strands. You can watch it here (or click the picture below).

Here's a fascinating and deeply disturbing description of how supplementary Vitamin D is made (if the article is based in truth) in this Substack post.

Concerning the use of technology as a tool - it helps us to merge the modern "social clock" with the natural "solar clock", but can never replace the natural sunlight (and dark) of Earth's 24 hour cycle.

Please note: you'll find on the market lamps that emit both UVB and Red/NIR light. Proceed with caution. Double-check that the spectral analysis of the lamp is legit and is as full spectrum as possible. Using a selection of individual light wavelengths is like alchemy. And the use of artificial UVB can be dangerous.

UVB, without prior proper skin priming (building a "solar callus"), without circadian alignment, and used in isolation or without the rest of the sun's spectrum, is playing with fire in my book. We need UVB (and all the spectrum), but here the evidence is clear - isolated UVB and UVA is dangerous.

If you want to learn how to build your solar callus properly, I strongly recommend Sandy Abram's comprehensive guide which you can purchase with a discount here (or click on the picture).

Dear Reader, Nia Day, Founder of the Halestra Wellness platform, interviewed me about my 2026 Fasting Challenge (5 days fasted in a forest wilderness) and wrote a beautiful, contemplative text. I loved this framing so much I feel obliged to share it with you. Thus I am reproducing it below (with her blessing). "I've been thinking a lot this week about discomfort. The things we instinctively avoid because they're inconvenient, unsettling or simply a little harder than the easier option. In...

Morning mist in the forest

Dear Reader, 5 days without food, living wild in the forests. This is what happened: 108 hrs fasted 82,000 steps 50 km hiked 1600 vertical metres 11500 calories burnt 0 ingested 4kg lighter 4 tics (discovered so far) Short version: I'm still alive! What went right: Didn't swallow a calorie from start to finish (piece of cake when you're fat adapted and have built up the "fasting muscle"), Got my re-feed just right (no over-eating or gastric problems), Lots of forest bathing (see list of...

Dear Reader, How long have you gone without food? Every year I do a Fasting Challenge. I spend a set amount of time fasted, engaging in demanding physical activity.
